Leaders’ day in Kisumu tackles corporal punishment

Forty-one of our lovely baby bonding leaders got together in Bandani, a suburb of Kisumu in south west Kenya recently. They discussed how to help mothers with toddlers, shared how their baby bonding groups are going and enjoyed lunch together.

Special thanks to Joseph Obadha and Lillian Achieng for organising the day. Catherine Onyango and Lillian for leading the teaching. They delivered some new scientific teaching on bringing up toddlers (from the agers of 1 to 3). This is based on material from Grobrain and the website Center on the developing child.

Pastor Joseph Obadha said, “The groups are fine. The mothers had this challenging question: Africans normally cane children because at the age 1-3 they are difficult to understand. How do we change this?”

The leaders represented communities from rural communities around Kisumu, which is the third largest city in Kenya.

Such leaders’ meetings are a vital part of the Lullaby Africa model, supporting local leaders who are taking new and sometimes controversial teaching into their communities. It can be controversial because this is an area in which women lead and children have hitherto been an ignored and undervalued section of society.
